1979 – 2004 Ford Mustang Launch Basics With Video
1979 – 2004 Ford Mustang Launch Basics With Video
If you're looking for maximum acceleration from your pony, you’ll need to know the ins and outs of getting off the line. This means understanding 1979 – 2004 Ford Mustang Launch Basics. The Fox-body and Fox-4 (1979 – 2004) Ford Mustang is perfect for the task and there are many excellent parts available to give you traction and make you quick and consistent.
The front of these Mustangs is equipped from Ford with a modified MacPherson Strut setup. This includes a separate spring and strut, connected to a lower A-arm. It's actually a pretty good deal for drag racing and it's easy to modify. A hard drag racing launch requires the nose of the car to lift and Brothers Performance offers a variety of spring and strut combinations to enhance performance.
As you can see in the attached video, Eibach, a leader in spring technology, offers a specific Drag Launch kit. This includes new front and rear springs and an airbag designed to be installed in the passenger-side rear spring. The soft front springs are designed to store energy when the car is static, while sitting on the starting line. Upon launch, they allow the nose to pop up, giving you extra traction.
The rear includes four lower control arms (also called trailing arms), two springs, main shocks and quad shocks and an anti-roll bar. The Eibach springs are also softer than stock, and work in unison with the Eibach front coils. Fox Mustangs have a tendency to roll rotate (twist) on launch. This can be counteracted by inflating the airbag included in the kit to the recommended setting, or by added a drag racing-specific anti-roll bar in place of the stock unit.
Any time you change springs you should consider your struts and shocks, as they may or may not be suited to the new spring rates. This goes for drag racing, and when installing lowering springs designed for handling. For drag racing, a common choice is the Lakewood 70/30 front struts and the 50/50 rear shocks. These will compliment the Eibach Drag Launch kit and help you get the most lift and best traction for a street / strip Mustang.
If you’re looking for a more aggressive setup, we offer the popular Moroso Trick Front and rear springs. These are mainly designed for racing, and will work best with Lakewood 90/10 front struts, or an adjustable strut. We also recommend going with aftermarket rear control arms, frame connectors and a driveshaft safety loop.

1996 – 2004 Ford Mustang BBK 73mm Throttle Intake Test
1996 – 2004 Ford Mustang BBK 73mm Throttle Intake Test
Mustang enthusiasts are always on the hunt for horsepower and BrothersPerformance.com is your one-stop source for all your performance needs. To show you some of the great parts we offer, our team recently did a 1996 – 2004 Ford Mustang BBK 73mm Throttle Intake test on a 2003 Mustang GT.
BBK’s 73mm Throttle Intake (Part Number 17801), sells for right around $250.00 and combines a 73mm Throttle Body with a high-flow Upper Intake Plenum into one sweet-looking unit that is easy to install and will outflow the stock throttle body and upper plenum on any 1996 to 2004 Mustang with the 4.6 liter V8 engine. It’s common to see as much as 12 to 15 horsepower gained at the wheels, but we wanted to see it with our own eyes.
The BBK Performance Mustang Throttle Intake is designed and manufactured here in the USA and will create quicker throttle response and better acceleration. All BBK Performance Power Plus throttle bodies are CNC-machined from high-quality 356 aluminum castings to ensure perfect OEM quality and fit every time. They feature die-stamped throttle linkages, double sealed bearings, and O-ringed throttle shafts.
This throttle body is also a direct replacement, and the kit includes all the necessary gaskets and instructions for a quick and easy installation. This is one of those simple installs designed for the do-it-yourselfer. All it takes is about 30 minutes of your time and basic hand tools. We especially like the show-quality Charcoal Titanium powdercoated finish.
Not only is the 73mm throttle bore larger than stock, but the inlet elbow features smoothed internal radius on the short and large turn, plus volume is increased. This equals improved volume and better overall airflow into the engine. BBK Performance also offers a larger 78mm version, designed to work great with nitrous oxide or forced induction.

Find Easy Power For Your Ford Mustang With Nitrous
Find Easy Power For Your Ford Mustang With Nitrous
Are you looking for quick and easy mods that will give you big results? If so, you can find easy horsepower for your Ford Mustang with nitrous. While nitrous oxide sounds like some magical, mystical power adder, it’s really not that complicated. Nitrous oxide allows you to add extra oxygen to the combustion process, and when matched with the correct amount of fuel, big power results. BrothersPerformance.com offers a wide range of nitrous kits, along with all the hardware needed if you’re looking to accessorize or grow your system. To prove our point, we recently installed an affordable kit from ZEX (Part Number 82023) on a mildly modified 1998 SVT Cobra. This kit installed in a few hours and is priced right around $599.99.
Nitrous Oxide (N2O) is stored in a nitrous bottle, which can be mounted easily in the trunk of a vehicle. Lines are run under the car, from the tank to a solenoid that’s mounted under the hood. The solenoid connects to the engine’s induction system and feeds the juice to the engine. There are a handful of nitrous system designs, from basic kits to multi-stage systems used for racing. Common terms you’ll hear are “Wet” and “Dry” systems.
A Dry system simply sprays nitrous only, a “Wet” system supplys nitrous and additional fuel to the engine. In addition, nitrous can be injected into the engine either before the throttle body (or just under the carburetor), or directly in the individual runners in the intake manifold (direct-port nitrous injection). The type of kit you select depends on the horsepower level you're trying to reach. In fact, some systems can be completely hidden, while others are the show-piece of the induction system.
The Zex kit, seen in the video, is a universal wet system designed to fit any 1986 to 2004 V8 Mustang. There is one nitrous line feeding the nitrous nozzle, and a single fuel line that connects between the nozzle and the fuel rail. Having the ability to tap into the fuel rail (using the Schrader valve) makes things quick and easy (especially considering all the lines and fittings are included in the kit). This kit designed to increase output on most EFI Mustangs by 75 – 125 horsepower. Brothers Performance does offer higher-performance kits from Zex and many other manufacturers. And we offer nitrous bottle filling at our location in Deland, Florida.
Another benefit of the ZEX kit is the unique Nitrous Management Unit, which contains and controls the nitrous solenoid. It uses a TPS (throttle position sensor) signal for activation, plus, the kit contains everything you’ll need, including an assortment of jets for tuning.
Now check out the video, and see how much power this 1998 SVT Cobra picked up with a simple nitrous install. And be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel, and follow us on Instagram and twitter @brothersperformance.
