2018 Mustang GT Owners Can Increase or Decrease the 460HP V8 Growl With the New Active Valve Performance Exhaust

Someone called the cops on Steve von Foerster. The former head of vehicle engineering for Ford Motor Company wasn’t thrilled, but he understood why.

On an otherwise peaceful morning in his suburban Detroit neighborhood, von Foerster had just backed a Shelby GT350 Mustang out of his driveway. As the car’s V8 engine thundered, an annoyed neighbor set aside their coffee cup and dialed 911.

Von Foerster had left before the officers arrived, and he didn’t end up with a ticket. Nor did he get angry. What he got was an idea for the new Mustang.

“I love the sound of the V8, but it can be loud, and you can’t annoy people like that in your neighborhood,” said von Foerster, who now leads Ford’s user experience team in product development. “It sounds so cool, but I thought, ‘There has to be a way to give people more control over the engine’s sound.’”

The experience fueled a discussion between von Foerster and fellow Mustang program team members that led to development of Quiet Exhaust mode and industry-first Quiet Start, known as “Good Neighbor Mode” among Mustang engineers. The new features on properly equipped 2018 Mustang GT vehicles allow drivers to keep engine sound at a minimum if they wish and to program quiet start-up times in advance.

While some sports cars offer active exhaust systems with on/off functionality, Mustang’s Quiet Start is the first to allow scheduling of times. Using steering wheel-mounted thumb controls, drivers toggle through a menu in the instrument cluster to select when they want to fire up their Mustang GT without sharing the event with neighbors. For example, between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m., drivers can keep the peace by scheduling their car to start, minus the roar.

Both new Quiet Exhaust mode and Quiet Start features will be part of the available active valve performance exhaust system on the new Mustang GT, along with different exhaust volumes for Normal, Sport and Track modes, giving customers more choice than ever before.

“Active valve performance exhaust gives Mustang owners the best of both worlds – that classic Mustang sound, and the ability to not wake up your neighbors when you leave the house early in the morning or arrive home late at night,” said Matt Flis, Ford exhaust development engineer.

Neighborhoods across the country should be thrilled. According to a recent poll by Ranker.com, loud engine revving ranks among the most annoying noises neighbors make, alongside other common nuisances including power tools, barking dogs and band practice. Only early-morning lawn mowing is more robustly despised. With new Quiet Exhaust mode and Quiet Start, Ford is doing its part to keep the peace.

“When sounds get up into the upper-70-decibel range, that’s typically about when they start to bother people,” said Flis. “With quiet start activated, the decibel level of the new Mustang GT drops by about 10 decibels, to a much more comfortable 72 decibels – about the level of a household dishwasher.”

On Mustang GT equipped with the available all-digital 12-inch instrument cluster, the exhaust mode menu appears within the pony menu. With the standard 4-inch cluster, exhaust mode is found within the settings menu.

Active valve performance exhaust is one of many changes Mustang fans will see when cars reach showrooms later this year. Bolting on parts is one of the most satisfying parts of owning a Mustang, but sometimes those parts don’t always get along. That’s why it’s often a safe bet to select a package from one outfit. Sometimes these packages consist of gear from a variety of manufacturers; other times they feature hard parts from the same manufacturer—but they all share the common thread of tuning to ensure they all play nice with one another. One of the leading manufacturers of bolt-on gear for Mustangs is BBK Performance, a company that got its start selling parts for pushrod 5.0s and quickly moved to manufacturing its own. Today BBK offers a full complement of the popular bolt-on parts for modern Coyote Mustangs,and recently decided to put these parts together in packages, complete with tuning from SCT Performance. “We want to offer a complete pack- Wayne Howard’s ’11 Mustang GT was the ideal testbed for these BBK Power Packages, as it was dealer stock. By adding a select group off BBK parts and topping them off with a BBK-specific calibration, the car registered some impressive gains across the entire rpm range. Horse Sense: Soon you’ll be able to round out the exhaust system featured here with BBK’s new VariTune mufflers. These mufflers feature a mechanical adjuster that allows you to tweak the mufflers’ sound, moving it up or down by 10 decibels. By Ted Sheckler Photos courtesy of BBK Performance age that optimizes the full performance potential of our products,” explained BBK Eastern Sales Manager Wayne Howard. “By combining the efforts of our engineers and SCT tuner James Gordon, we were able to develop tune files that increase horsepower and torque, all while maintaining stock driveability. The included BBK/ SCT tuners will be pre-loaded with tune files calibrated specifically for BBK products, and this will eliminate the need and expense of a custom tune.” We’ve touched on some of these parts in previous issues, most notably the throttle body and cold-air intake (“Fly by Wire,” July ’12, p. 98), but we were intrigued to see how the full package, replete with long-tube headers, would improve Coyote performance. It’s worth noting that BBK will develop similar packages for other applications in the future, but the setups we are covering in this story are the Blackout CAI and tuner (PN 17685, $699.99); Blackout CAI, tuner, and throttle body (PN 71305, $1099.99); and Blackout CAI, tuner, throttle body, and long-tubes (PN 71345, $2099.99). Fortunately, Wayne is a rabid enthusiast and the owner of a ’11 Mustang GT. He happily volunteered his ride as the rolling laboratory for the development of these packages. Wayne bolted the parts on his car while snapping photos for us, and worked with James Gordon of Tuning by James (www.tuningbyjames.com) to develop BBK specific calibrations that You have to love making power with bolt-on mods. Simply adding the BBK cold-air intake and tune generated an extra 18.9 hp and 36.10 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels. That’s definitely a gain you can feel. Stepping up to the BBK 90mm throttle body shows the factory setup is pretty efficient, but there’s still some gains to be had, as it added 2.03 hp and 1.15 lb-ft of torque. Our guess is the gains might have been larger if the throttle body was added after the exhaust, but that’s a test for another time. That said, adding the BBK long-tubes and high-flow catalytic X-shape crossover really paid off at the back wheels. These parts bolster horsepower by an additional 27.46 and 14.88 lb-ft of torque. The peak-to-peak gains totaled 48.39 hp and 45.77 lb-ft of torque, and the spread was even wider at higher rpm, which shows the value of a matched combination. “It amazes me that we were able to add this much power to the already highly tuned Coyote engine,” Wayne said. “Ford did a great job developing this engine, but our packages prove there is additional power to be gained are geared toward drive ability and safety rather than all-out performance. That said, the gains are pretty impressive. “The additional power is addictive!,” Wayne said. “The car was impressive in stock form, but with the increased horsepower, torque, and sound, it’s hard to keep your foot off the throttle. Driving around town is also more enjoyable due to the low-end gains.” After you skip to the dyno sidebar, be sure to backtrack to the captions to see the steps responsible for those impressive naturally aspirated gains. 5.0
