If you’re looking to add some serious spark to your 2005+ Corvette or Camaro V8 (or any 2005+ GM car with LS2, LS3, LS7, LS9, LSA, L92, L99, and L76 engine), Granatelli Malevolent Coil Packs have no equal. These GM coil packs are not only much higher output than stock; they are nearly double the output of their closest competitor. Featuring a whopping 85,000 volts, the Malevolent coils are guaranteed to ignite even the craziest engine setups.
Though the stock GM coil packs have a decent output, there’s still room for improvement even on an otherwise stock engine. Granatelli did some extensive dyno testing with these coils and found that they would consistently gain 6 to 8 horsepower on stock applications and sometimes as much as 12 horsepower with no other mods. That’s a crazy gain for something that bolts on in minutes. Even better, on heavily modified, boosted applications these really shine. The amount of time spent on research and development of these coils shows in the well documented science behind how they work and their extensive dyno testing.
Besides the well-documented power gains there are other improvements to be had from the Granatelli Malevolent coil packs. They have been shown to increase fuel mileage, throttle response and even idle quality and drivability on street driven Camaros and Corvettes. That’s a bold claim, but a simple Google search will show you that hundreds, if not thousands of customers all over the world are seeing improvements across the board with these simple bolt on coil packs.
Installation is very straight forward and can typically be done in about half an hour or so. You simply remove the spark plug wires from and harnesses from each coil, then remove the sixteen 10mm bolts (that’s 2 per coil) holding the coils on. Speaking of spark plug wires, now is a great time to upgrade to Granatelli spark plug wires for even greater spark delivery. Reinstallation is simply the reverse of removal.
The only special equipment required is a torque wrench, which you really should have by now if you’re doing your own installs. These coils use fairly small bolts, so their torque spec is pretty light at 106 inch pounds. Notice that’s inch pounds, not foot pounds. If you don’t have a torque wrench that reads inch pounds you can likely borrow one from most parts stores or just buy one to keep around for other mods. Late model cars like the Camaro and Corvette have a ton of small fasteners, so you’ll end up using it again for sure.
You may be asking “do I really need that much more voltage?” That’s a valid question since these are nearly 4 times the output of the GM coil packs used on the Corvette and Camaro V8s. The simple answer is “it depends” but the fact that even stock applications show gains with these coils seems to indicate that they really are improving combustion, even with stock compression. So you could imagine that when compression increases, particularly in high boost applications you only stand to see even more gain with the Granatelli coil packs.
So if you're running a supercharger or turbo on your Camaro or Corvette, you're definitely going to want a set of these coil packs. Not only will it help to ensure proper combustion and increase power without any other changes, it may also allow you to increase spark plug gap slightly without having spark "blow out", which is where the cylinder pressure is so high the spark is unable to jump the plug gap. Increasing spark plug gap slightly, coupled with proper tuning will usually increase power, as long as your ignition is up to the task. With this much electrical power on tap, the Granatelli Malevolent coils will have no trouble completing the circuit. That makes these a "must-have" piece of supporting hardware on a boosted application.
Another possible area of concern is whether these are compatible with custom tuning, particularly increasing dwell time. The good news is they are, and actually have much more potential dwell. Increasing coil dwell time is a pretty advanced tuning step, but it’s fairly common with high output racing engines and even top level street cars. Granatelli’s testing of stock coils showed that they could typically only increase dwell from 2 to 3.5ms (milliseconds). Testing of other brands of aftermarket coils showed as high as 5ms, but they could only handle it for a short period before dropping back to stock or near-stock output. Granatelli Malevolent LS coils can withstand as high as 12ms of dwell, which is far beyond what is typically required even into the 2000+ horsepower mark. So when it comes to tuning, the sky is the limit.
