Tech Notes: Throttle Bodies
Many people ask this very common question: "Which throttle body size is best?". To best answer this question, let us first address a few other aspects.
A 1986-95 5.0 motor is equipped with a 60 mm Throttle Body from the factory. However, some models such as the 1993-95 Mustang Cobra's came with SVO's 65mm unit. Now while many believe that 65mm is large enough, extensive dyno testing reveals that a 70mm actually works better on even very mild bolt-on vehicles. On vehicles equipped with an Edelbrock, Cobra or GT-40 manifold, the 70mm also improves over the 65mm. This is attributed to the 70mm mouth opening found standard on these mentioned intake manifolds.
Now why would some people say that a 70mm is too large? More than likely, this opinion is limited to the retailers who only carry the SVO product line and are limited to a 65mm. While companies carrying brands such as BBK and Edelbrock offer 65mm, 70mm and 75mm choices. They even offer a 80mm race unit for the serious racers out there.
