Stroker Myths by Dr. Evil
As the 5.0 motors are starting to add up the miles many of the owners of these power plants that don't want to die are looking to re-build or get in on the stroker craze that is hitting the market today. While there is a vast selection of stroker combinations to choose from for the 5.0 base block there seems to be different opinions and sometimes myths regarding different combinations such as rod to stroke ratios and oil burning.
These concerns seem to be at the top of the list when it comes to making that decision of which stroker is best for my application. Many of the most experienced engine builders consider these factors non essential due to the fact that there are a number of more critical factors involved when it comes to building a quality engine no matter what the combination is such as:
- preparing the block with accurate machining processes
- a well balanced rotating assembly
- making sure that all the critical hardware is torqued to its proper specification in the recommended sequence
- choosing the proper ring package for your application
Most stroker combinations should utilize a standard tension oil ring package unless the engine will be used for a race only situation.
