Tech Notes: Roller Rockers
When it comes to the subject of Roller Rocker Arms, many styles are available. However, it is very important to choose the correct ratio, otherwise piston to valve clearance may be limited, and major engine damage can occur.
On most 1985-95 5.0 liter applications, the pistons are equipped with valve relief's to allow for better clearance. (1986 models are equipped with flat top pistons.) With the 1985/1987-95 models, it is usually safe to run up to .545' of lift on the intake and exhaust. Now keep in mind, this changes with every variable. For example, heads, decking, valve size, etc. Therefore, it is always recommended that you clay the pistons to insure adequate clearance. Another area to remember is the use of adjustable rocker arms on aftermarket cylinder heads.
