Tech Notes: Plug Wires
Spark plug wires are the arteries of the ignition system. A good quality wire, proper routing and routine inspections are all important in getting the most performance out of your ignition system. Wires that are old, crooked, burned or tangled together can cause a variety of problems. Make sure to use good wire separators and route your wires correctly in order to avoid any contact with the headers' and X-EGR Tubes.
There are a few simple steps to take in order to keep your engines spark plug wires in tip-top shape. For starters, apply a small amount of dielectric grease to each wire terminal. This will keep any moisture out of the boot while lubricating and insulating the terminal to plug connection. It also aids in pulling the plug wires off the spark plugs without tearing the boot or wire.
Using good wire separators is the key to preventing inductive crossfire, which occurs when two wires that are consecutive in firing order are run next to each other. Separators also keep wires away from the hot exhaust manifold, sharp corners etc. They also keep the engine looking good.
Quality wires that are maintained, separated and kept in good condition are essential to top performance.
