Tech Notes: High Performance Lowering Springs
Many people ask, "What makes a progressive rate spring different from a specific rate version?". To understand this, you must first understand that all springs have a certain rate of (stiffness) to them. What makes a progressive different from the specific version is its unevenly spaced winding, which allows it to become stiffer as it is compressed during cornering. This allows the manufacturer to design it with a lighter rate at ride height. Then as the cars weight is shifted from side to side while cornering, the spring is compressed, therefore becoming stiffer. While this is better for overall ride quality, it does give up a performance edge to the specific rate version, which offers consistent ride stiffness for improved handling with less sponginess.
