96-98 IMRC (Intake Manifold Runner Controls) Removing Secondary Blades for Improved Performance and Horsepower
Estimated time: approx 3 hours
Having a problem with your IMRC's not opening up? Feel like your Cobra has lost power?
OR does your car feel a bit sluggish at high RPM's? OR maybe you just want to free up some hidden horses?
Whatever your case might be, here are some simple instructions on how to clean/remove/replace your IMRC actuator and blades.
First, start by disconnecting the battery, removing the strut tower brace (if applicable), relieving the pressure in the fuel system (this cant be accomplished by simply letting the car sit over night, or by removing the fuel pump fuse and attempting to start the car), finally drain the coolant. Although coolant does not flow through the intake of the DOHC engine, the coolant must be drained.
Removing the intake manifold requires the coolant flow tubes (located above the alternator) to be detached from the block. Once the coolant is drained, the flow tubes can then be detached from the block giving access to the front two manifold stud/bolts.
Next remove the intake cover, along with the fuel lines, injectors, and rail mounting bolts. After this remove the 10 bolts/studs that hold the intake to the block. With the 10 bolts/studs removed, the intake manifold is ready to be removed. You'll find the IMRC actuator mounted on the bottom of the intake manifold. Look carefully on how the wires were routed. This will make it that much easier when it's time to re-install. Carefully remove the intake manifold, along with the IMRC plates and actuator.
Once you removed the intake manifold, you'll be able to see just how dirty the secondary intake ports are, along with the runner, and ports. Use a good carb cleaner to clean the ports, runners, and secondary plates. Check the gaskets, make sure there's no rip or tears in them, and if they're in good condition you can opt to re-use them. Once the runners, ports, and the plates are thoroughly cleaned, you can then start removing the blades from the plates.
The blades are held down by two screws, and some loc-tite. You'll need a Philips screw driver for these screws. Press down hard when removing these screws to prevent them from stripping. When re-installing make sure to re-connect the actuator, this will keep the "check engine" light from coming on. If the coolant drained is still in good condition re-use. Don't forget to purge/bleed the system, and check for any leaks.
Once you get everything back together, turn the key a few times just enough to prime the fuel system. Start the car and let idle for a few minutes.
