Tech Notes: Camshaft Selection
How do I choose the correct camshaft?
This is one of the most common questions faced by today's enthusiasts. However, with some basic understanding of camshaft specifications, this choice can become much easier.
The main items to look at with today's 5.0 liter roller cams are the lift, advertised duration and duration at .050'. While the factory 5.0 liter cam is rated at approximately 276 intake/266 exhaust - .444 inches of lift on both intake and exhaust and about 214 duration at .050' lift. A typical aftermarket cam will be rated with a lift value of .480 - .540, 270 - 300 advertised duration, and 220 - 228 degrees duration at .050.
While lift affects the top end flow, it is the duration numbers that will affect idle stability. To determine the best camshaft for your particular application, you must determine what heads and induction system you will be using, and will it be supercharged? Also, what type of axle ratios and driving conditions do you plan on? Once you have made up your mind on the basics, then it is time to contact our Technical Department for their recommendations. This will also help to ensure that the overall package you have chosen will work to your expectations.
